This is a very refreshing drink. In India, many street hawkers sell it during the summer months. Indians often drink their fruit juices spiced. The natural sugar in melon and the added salt, replace some of the electrolytes lost on a hot, sweaty day. It is very easy to make, give it a try? Quantities can vary according to availability and taste. Also see Melon Juice and try other 'drink' on this site.

Chaat masala can be added to any fruit juice, but is especially good in slightly tart juices, like orange and grapefruit. If too tart, add a little sugar to taste.

  • 1 tsp. per helping Chat Masala. Ready made chat masala, which is very good, is available at all Indian grocery stores.

  • Juice of half a lemon

  • Salt to taste

  • Sugar or sweetener, if melon is not sweet enough

Instructions

  1. Cut and de-seedand watermelon into pieces.

  2. Blend with chat masala, lemon juice and salt.

  3. Add sugar, if needed, and stir.

  4. To chill, keep in a covered jar or bottles. this will stop it absorbibg other strong odours from trhe fridge.

  5. Serve chilled in tall glasses. You may wish to add a couple of ice cubes during blending.

Notes

  • You can serve it without spice mix if you prefer.

  • Addition of lemon juce and sugar to the juice has been recommended by one of our readers, Renee Rowlands.
